That's talent!

The 1960s were amazing for many reasons.

Volkswagen Beetles had just rolled out of factories, color TVs were brought to our world, everyone was trying their best to learn “the twist,” and turtlenecks were still cool.

The music

What people loved the most, however, was the music.

It’s in that time that The Beatles made their debut and went on to conquer the world. I mean, five decades later and we still know who they were, right? But this piece isn’t about them.

Trailing closely behind in second place was a legendary female voice, Lesley Gore. If you’ve heard the lyrics, “It’s my party, I can cry if I want to…” in movies and on shows, you should thank her.

She made her debut at the young age of sixteen while still in high school.

However, let’s move our attention to her second most popular single, “You Don’t Own Me,” and to a girl who just did a cover of the song.

Meet Charlotte

Charlotte Summers is a 13-year-old who has the voice of older musicians at the peak of their careers. More recently, she took the stage on America’s Got Talent.

She chose, “You Don’t Own Me,” by Lesley Gore.

For a 13-year-old about to perform in front of an audience of people, she was unusually calm and put together. But once you find out her background it makes sense.

She first fell in love with America’s Got Talent at the age of seven when she saw her first episode. Since then, she always wanted to sing and make music like the amazing contestants she saw.

Lucky for Charlotte, she has an amazing voice.

At the young age of nine, she appeared in Les Miserables before going on to compete in La Voz Kids (a Spanish spin-off of The Voice Kids). She didn’t win, but her experience gave her the confidence to give singing a shot. The next year she participated in Big Talent Marbella and won. She also won first prize in one of the categories of a huge contest called EuroKids in Italy.

Gaining popularity

Her American debut was in April 2018 on the show Little Big Shots where she performed an amazing cover of James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s World.”

Her performance was so amazing that the producers of the show brought her back to perform the closing act during the Little Big Shots’ Christmas special. She chose another song from the ’60s, Charles Brown’s “Please Come Home for Christmas.” She did so well that she got standing ovations on both.

On the stage

With all that in mind, it makes sense that she wasn’t trembling or nervously breaking her voice on the stage of America’s Got Talent.

She hopped onto the stage and prepared to give what is arguably her best performance to date.

You could tell the audience didn’t know what to expect. Charlotte sang the first line and you could already hear the audience gasp in amazement. One of the judges leaned back in surprise and said,

“She’s only 13!”

If you watch America’s Got Talent, you know that Simon Cowell is the hardest judge to please. But as Charlotte sang, hitting all those high notes, you could see him smile, which is a rarity.

Needless to say, she did a wonderful job. Everyone from the audience to the judges gave Charlotte a standing ovation.
