At what age do your children become too old to bathe together? It sounds like a strange question… And it is. But weirdly, it’s something that we need to think about.
Apparently, this mom and dad both had very different ideas about what that age is. It made for a very interesting discussion and now we’re all questioning ourselves!
It’s a sensitive subject.
This mother was bathing her twin boy and girl together as they entered their preteens at 11-years-old. When their dad found out, he thought it was kind of creepy, but his wife strongly disagreed and urged him to steer clear of sexualizing their children.
So who’s right, and who’s wrong? Is anyone even right or wrong here?
“So let me just say, I love my son and daughter dearly,” the anonymous father wrote on a now-deleted Reddit post. “They’ve been a blessing on the lives of my wife and I, and I thank God for them every day.”
“When we first had them, we bathed them at the same time just to save time and because it’s easier to keep an eye on them if they’re in the same place. But their about to hit puberty (about to turn 11 next month) and I don’t think they should be doing it anymore.”
The father went on to explain that it’s “not normal” for “pubescent children to bathe together.” Not even if they are twins, he specified.
He went on further to express his other concerns. He explained that even when they are not bathing, the twins spend a lot of time together. They are constantly next to each other at home, they hold hands in public, and they always hug.
The father wondered if this was normal twin behavior, or going a little bit too far.
So he did what any good father would do and he opened up a conversation about it with his wife.
But to his surprise, his wife very much disagreed with his thoughts. She didn’t think it was weird at all.
“She says they’ve been doing it their whole life, they’re just kids, etc, what’s the problem with it? She says it’s wrong for me to sexualize them in the first place, since they’re just kids and they’re siblings,” the father wrote.
So he asked the good people of Reddit: “What do you think? Am I just being a prude?”
Surprisingly, the comment section on Reddit turned out to be quite a mixed bag of reactions. One thing is for sure though: no one else back with their opinions.
Some people agreed with the father and assured him that 11-years-old is far too old to be taking baths with your sibling.
One person questioned why they were even still taking baths: “11? They’re old enough to shower! I would say they can shower separately at this point as well,” they wrote.
“The hugging and holding hands is fine, they love each other. The bathing together, at age 11? That’s creepy,” another person said.
“They’re far too old to bathe together. It’s borderline creepy at this point,” another person said.
And then there were people who agreed with the mother, saying that this was perfectly normal for the twins.
“Please don’t listen to the people who are calling your kids creepy and abnormal. They are neither of those things,” someone assured him.
“Me and my twin brother bathed together until around 12-13. Was just a convenience thing and we didn’t care. I wouldn’t force the issue and just let them grow out of it,” another person said.
We guess, ultimately, this is a conversation that needs to happen between the two parents. Lots of interesting points, and definitely a touchy subject!
