Sometimes there is just so much noise around us that we wish it would go away. For one woman though any noise was music to her ears.
The Story of Allyson
Allison sat across from her health care provider, anticipating that she was about to experience one of the happiest days of her life.
This twenty-six-year-old lady had discovered at the age of twenty-four that she was having trouble with her hearing. Things only got worse for Allison as she became older.
Tears Before and After
It is apparent that Allison had high hopes of what was about to happen
She started her appointment in tears as she was preparing for the first test to see how successful her Cochlear implants were going to be. As she began to hear sounds, she was startled.
The Sweetest Words
The health care provider’s words were no doubt music to Allison’s ears, but the words that her husband spoke went to her heart.
For the first time, she was able to hear those words that mean so much to a woman. The smile on her face when she heard her husband say, “I love you, Allison,” is worth a thousand words.
The Difference Between Allison and Those With Good Hearing
Most would agree that if they were going to be subjected to a voice that sounded like “Donald Duck,” that they would soon begin to grumble.
For Allison, this was good news because it meant that she would be able to hear.
The Cochlear Implants
Thanks to modern technology, it means that a device known as a cochlear implant can be surgically inserted into the ear to help restore hearing with some people.
The normal hearing process is replaced with electric signals. This is why people like Allison with have days of adjustment to their new way of hearing.
The Success Stories
While Allison’s story is heart warming, it is only one of many where cochlear implants have transformed lives.
One man, eighty years of age, returned to work after having to leave his fifteen-year career because of hearing loss. Despair set in when told that hearing aids would be of no help, but joy replaced it when he heard about cochlear implants. Going through with the procedure has allowed him to return to a job he had many years before losing his hearing.
Degrees of Deafness
Unless someone is dealing with hearing loss, they may not be aware of just how common this is.
It is estimated that out of every thousand children in the US, two or three will be born with some degree of hearing loss. Statistics also show that 95% of the children who are born deaf have parents that have no hearing issues.
New Technology For the Deaf
Exciting new hearing technology on the horizon.
The Cochlear implants are, no doubt a miracle for those who have had success with them. However, there is a lot of exciting technology in this field of medicine that is going to have a major impact for many of those that are deaf.
