What is the INEOS 1:59 Challenge?

The famous INEOS 1:59 Challenge is a 1:59:59 marathon that is the equivalent of running a 100m-sprint in just over 17 seconds – 422 times in a row! Yes, it may seem impossible but this man has proven us wrong!

Eliud Kipchoge is now tagged as the greatest male marathoner ever! This 34-year-old Kenyan runner is already an Olympic champion for winning 5000m bronze and silver medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games. He even holds the world record for the distance: 2:01:39. Last 2017, he already tried the INEOS 1:59 Challenge but came short 26 seconds!

Eliud isn’t the type of person who would just give up!

History has been made!

On October 12, in Vienna, Eliud Kipchoge completed the 26.2 mile distance marathon in 1:59:40!

Eliud’s bid to run a sub-two-hour marathon, which was funded by INEOS was contested across 4.4 laps of a 9.6-kilometre course. He was also supported by 41 pacemakers — which includes Australians Stewart McSweyn, Jack Rayner, Patrick Tiernan, and Brett Robinson.

The pacemakers who supported Eliud formed a V shape around him, making sure that he is protected from the wind.

Along with his pacemakers, they also followed an electric pace car that has a laser beam. The reason for this is to be able to project the ideal position of the runners on the road.

As the audiences were breathlessly watching Eliud run the last kilometre, the pacemakers and beamed car peeled away and Eliud pointed to the crowd and smiled – as he made history!

“The 41 pacemakers are among the best athletes ever in the world,” Kipchoge said to ABC.

“I can say thank you to them, I appreciate them for accepting and together we made history on this one,” he continued telling his interviewer.
