This mama meerkat gave the Miami Zoo, their first-ever baby meerkats in 72-years of being open and they are so precious. What makes it even cuter, is the adoration you can see in their mother’s eyes.

Despite being the oldest zoo in Florida, the Miami zoo has never had baby meerkats, until now
8-year-old meerkat, Yam Yam, has made history at the Miami zoo by being the first meerkat to give birth in 72-years of housing animals. The fifth-largest zoo in America, and the oldest zoo in Florida, has welcomed these pups that have taken the internet by storm.

Yam Yam, who came to the Miami zoo from Busch Gardens, is the proudest mama in the whole world judging by her huge smile. The father could be any of the three brother meerkats housed at the zoo, but they’re all working collectively to care for the pups who are born blind and helpless.

Since their birth, Yam Yam and the three brothers, Diego, Gizmo, and Joe have been keeping a close eye on the babies and giving them all the care they need.

“Zoo staff had a hands-off approach to allow the group to properly bond with the infants and created barriers in front of the public side of the exhibit to minimize any disturbances that may cause excess stress on the new family and lead to abandonment of the babies.” Staff told NBC 6 Miami.
Meerkats are extremely social animals, they usually live in mobs with dozens of individuals who all have different jobs
Descendants of the mongoose, the carnivorous animals are constantly on the lookout for danger and even have a sentry who’s sole job is keeping watch for dangerous predators. They bark at any sign of problems, alerting the rest of the mob to scatter into the tunnels they love to dig. Luckily, Yam Yam is in a safe environment and won’t have to worry about threats.
