There are a few things in each industry that only those in said industry can truly appreciate. While those in retail may balk at people who unfold all of the clothes, those in the restaurant industry have a different set of complaints.
1) We All Do It
I don’t think it really matters what industry you’re in, if you’re training someone, you make the rules. While most rules make sense, there are certain unsaid rules that we all just accept.
2) Please Give Me Money
Perks of a busy night? More money. Perks of a dead night? Everything else. If only the two could merge together to make the perfect night in the restaurant world.
3) So Stop Asking
Anyone who works at a restaurant knows that you work until they say you can leave. Sometimes it’s noon and sometimes it’s 10pm. There is no in between.
4) You’re Old, Sharon
Should we ID everyone? If we do, people get mad that you need to see their ID even though they look old. Then again, they are offended if you don’t ask because they look old.
5) Do They, Do They Really?
When it comes to working at a restaurant, breaks are optional…for your manager. It might be the law but people working here get breaks when there is a break in customers.
6) Who Needs Therapy?
Plot twist: we all need therapy. Sadly, we can’t afford it, so we simply vent to our co-workers because they can’t leave so they have no choice but to hear you out.
7) Show Me the Money
Servers get most of their money (if they are lucky) from tips. It’s a sad world, but that’s just the way it is. At least they always have cash on them, to deposit right away.
8) Ya’ll Rude
You really won’t understand how ignorant people can be until you deal with customers all day. Sometimes you wonder if it’s all put on just to make you miserable.
9) Sorry, I Love Mopping
Potential customers never cease to make sure that you’re closed thrity minutes after closing time. Can’t you make an exception for them just this once? There’s a five dollar tip in it for you!
10) It’s the Schedule
Next to doctors, restaurant employees have the craziest schedules. You work while the sun is up and then some. Then you go home and sleep and do it again. Sounds fun.
11) It’s Your Responsibility
Need a personal day? Sick day? Are you dead? No matter the reason, it is up to you to make sure someone covers your shift even if it’s for all eternity. Rest in peace.
12) Managers are the Best
Why in the world are managers all like this? They will forever use your little inside jokes to try to make you feel more comfortable. At times, it has the opposite effect.
13) She Isn’t Wrong
You know, she might have meant it before you got all rude on her. But now, she’s actually a little glad that it took so long. That’s the way it works in this world.
14) Save the Whales
I guess this makes sense if the lady cares about people only and not the animals. But still, picking and choosing which causes to fight against your server for is kind of ridiculous.
15) Try Again
This kind of thing happens more than we’d like to admit. At times, you will feel really bad about tricking the customer. But then other times, you’re kind of proud.
16) A Little Hot Here
Everything is fine. Don’t mind these scalding hands, right? It’s funny when you’re the one who remembers what everyone ordered even when they don’t remember themselves.
17) Life of a Server
No matter how hard you try, sometimes, people can get to you. Imagine being so mean that you make someone who is actually serving you cry? What an existence.
18) Please Make This a Thing
This could get really messy. I mean, at least the customers are paying to be mean while their victims are getting paid (if you can call it that) to get yelled at.
19) Silly Ole Me
Oh right! Must have left that extra arm in the kitchen! You know what, this happens so often that servers should start bringing another server or dishwasher with them to carry stuff.
20) The Gaul Some People Have
This is legit what it feels like all day long. You have that first hour or two when you feel like you just opened. But after that, you want to go home so if people could stop coming, that’d be great.
21) Go to Taco Bell
Thirty minutes is the real cut off. That’s how long it should take for you to order and eat. After that, you’re actually making an entire kitchen staff work late so you can have your chilli cheese fries.
22) Just Want More Rolls
This is so relatable. Who hasn’t dreamt of working all night long? It’s really frustrating because that’s your one break and it gets taken over by work. Again! Is there any rest?
23) Find a Clean One
It’s awkward cleaning a table that someone is sitting at, especially when they complain that the table is dirty. Like, there’s a clean one right there, please use it.
24) That’s a Big Oof
This is so hilarious and so wrong at the same time. Is it possible for someone to eat an entire bowl of dip and think it’s soup? Joke is on the server though because the dip is more expensive.
25) Wish I Could
Believe it or not, it’s the nice people who do this. They may be refreshing but it also feels like they are flaunting the fact that they aren’t working and you are. Such a pity.
26) This is Why, Carol
People wonder why their food took longer than the other table that ordered appetizers the way they came. Well, you changed your mind twelve times.
27) And So It Continues
If you haven’t heard this yet, you should. The more you have it seems the less you give. While those working minimum wage always manage to leave a decent tip!
28) Be a Good Person
Most people I know do this, what about you? It takes all of a few seconds to make their job a lot easier. Do it while you’re waiting for your ticket and you’re good to go.
29) Excuse Me, Waitress!
Customers are rude, that’s a fact. But to have one knock on the bathroom door and tell you they are ready to order is just another lever. Imagine thinking this is okay.
30) Silent Communication
The communication between QA, servers, and cooks can be little to none. So if you could just use emojis to let each other know how you’re doing, that would be fanstastic.
31) Like, What’s Up With That?
It’s funny how this makes sense without any real context. Passionate chefs who will make you a killer meal seem to lean toward the rolled up sleeves and tattoo persona.
32) Coming Right Up
Lame jokes are the going thing between customers and servers. Sometimes you dish it out and sometimes you take it. Either way, you end up feeling embarassed for both of you.
33) Dang Millenials
So, this is something you hear all the time. Turns out the best tippers are the ones who know what you’re going through. We all go through hard times, so help each other out.
34) Here It Is Again
You will hear this time and time again. The older generation is infamous for leaving bad tips and being as rude as can be. Now it isn’t everyone but it is the going thing.
35) And Pause
You may have one conversation that takes all day long but somehow you both remember where you left off every single time. Now that’s great brain training.
36) Speak to My Manager
Arguing with a customer is never a good idea, so don’t do it. It’s not worth it. However, you are forgiven for gritting your teeth when they are positive that you are wrong.
37) Super Lie
No one wants to serve a customer when it’s within an hour of closing. So if you pull up two minutes before and start ordering after closing time, no one likes you.
38) Allergic to What?
This happens more than you’d think. People pick and choose what they are “allergic” to when they want to make sure you get their order right. Just trust.
39) Oops, What Did I Do?
When you hear this phrase, you know that the manager wants to know who totally screwed up. If it was you, you probably already know what it was because it’s the same thing that happened last time.
40) Sorry, Didn’t Know
For some reason, customers think that no matter what they order, you will carry it all in one trip. In an ideal world maybe, but as of today, most humans only have two arms.
