Not everyone loves dogs. Some people see them as generally adorable, friendly creatures, while some don’t really hold much fondness for the creature. To them, dogs are huge, messy, and unpredictable. Quite frankly, there’s a bit of truth in this. Some dogs are huge (but size isn’t an indication of temperament; most large dogs are incredibly gentle and affectionate), most of them are messy (until proper training is given), and their being unpredictable stems from various aggressions: social, territorial, protective, possessive, fear, defensive.

Since not everyone appreciates dogs, it’s perfectly understandable that some people have prejudices against dogs in general or certain breeds. A common misconception, for instance, is that pitbulls are incredibly aggressive and bite just about anyone. Basically, some people believe pitbulls are just mean, just like one elderly woman who lived in the same building as Arjanit Mehana and his pitbull, Simba.

The elderly woman always avoided Simba despite his friendly advances. “He always tried to greet her, but she called him mean and looked at him with fear. She never liked him because he was a ‘bad breed’,” shared Arjanit.

Little did they know that all that was about to change. The elderly woman’s change of heart happened after Mehana and Simba returned from a walk. As they passed by her apartment, Simba started barking and pawing at the door. Confused, Mehana continued to pull on his pet’s leash to get him to walk on until he heard a faint voice from inside the apartment calling for help.

It turns out the elderly woman was badly hurt. She broke her hip after a bad fall and was apparently stuck on the floor for two days. Upon hearing her cry for help, Mehana immediately called for an ambulance and waited until the medical team arrived. Mehana recalls how he assumed the elderly woman’s gratitude was directed towards him until she corrected him and said she was thanking Simba. “She said, ‘Thank you for hearing me.’ I thought she was talking to me at first, but then she said, ‘No, not you – the nice doggie.’”

Mehana is hoping this heartwarming story will inspire others to keep a more open mind about pitbulls and be more accepting of the breed. “I know Simba is a wonderful dog, but I hope this event will make people see bully breeds differently. We, as human beings, must deserve their loyalty and love.”

It was an unfortunate situation that ended happily: the elderly woman received proper medical care and attention, and Simba gained a new friend.
