There are certain decisions in our lives that radically change how we live. Getting married, buying a car, or selling a home all fit into that category! Occasionally, however, a decision will come up that doesn’t just change your life, it changes someone else’s, too.
Luca Trapanese is an Italian man who made one of those decisions.
Luca is one of those rare “good people”. Ever since he was a boy he had been involved with social programs and wanted to help the people around him in need. When he met a special girl much later in his life, that heart of his showed through yet again.
Alba is a baby girl that was born with Down Syndrome.
Alba didn’t have the best kind of life growing up, either. When she was born, she was abandoned by her mother who didn’t want her. Her special needs were too much and dealing with her wasn’t something the mother was willing to do.
After her mother rejected her, she was put up for adoption.
As things go, adoption wasn’t easy for Alba. After being put up for adoption, she was rejected by TWENTY families who saw her. That staggering number just shows the kind of situation that was going on when Luca came around.
With his experience in social organizations and with some groups he joined, he made things work!
“Since I was 14 years old, I have volunteered and worked with the disabled so I felt I had the right knowledge and experience to do it,” he said.
The adoption was difficult to finalize, however. For anyone familiar with the process, you know how tough it can be. The agencies typically prefer a traditional family unit when allowing children to be adopted and Luca wasn’t that.
Luca is a gay man who became single after a relationship lasting over a decade.
This reality made things substantially harder for Luca. Even though he knew it would be hard, he had his heart set on adopting a child with a disability and Alba was the girl who stole his heart!
“For me, a disabled child is not a second choice solution, but a conscious choice with respect to my vocation and my abilities,” he said.
After some time and struggles, he finally won!
Luca was able to become the dad that he always wanted and Alba was the most perfect little girl in the whole world. Since she entered his life, it has been one of joy and happiness – kids just make things brighter in life!
Even more, Alba is able to live a happy and healthy life.
So much more is known now about Down syndrome than in the past. With all this knowledge, Alba will be able to live a healthy life and build families and friendships of their own. In fact, studies show that people who have someone with Down syndrome in the family are significantly happier!
