Parents Make Difficult Decision For Conjoined Twins' Future
Doctors gave Chelsea and Nick a slim chance of hope their conjoined twin daughters would live past 24 hours. They have become medical miracles, but the parents are now faced with a controversial decision about their futures.

There’s a Japanese proverb that best describes the story you’re about to read:

“A father’s goodness is higher than that mountain. A mother’s goodness is deeper than the sea.”

Meet The Torres Family.

This perfectly depicts the kind of character that Nick and Chelsea Torres of Blackfoot, Idaho exhibit after deciding not to separate their conjoined twin daughters upon learning that the medical procedure could endanger their lives had they decided to go ahead with it.

A Medical Procedure With Dire Consequences.

Nick and Chelsea Torres were elated to learn that they were going to be parents. What they didn’t expect, however, was that they were going to be parents to pair of conjoined twins and this was during the time Chelsea was pregnant.

To make matters worse, Chelsea was informed that the children had a 5% chance of living for more than 24 hours after they would be delivered. But terminating the pregnancy was just not in the heart of this benevolent maternal figure, who in her words said:

Me as a mother, I couldn’t separate them.

She further explained:

I felt that if they were fighting and wanted to be here that I should still fight for them as well.

Nick shared the same sentiments by saying, “They were my everything at that point.”

The two sisters, Callie (the left side) and Carter (the right side) are both three years old. Although their hearts and stomach are separate, their livers are fused with one another, and they share the same intestinal tract, and bladder and each of them controls an arm as well as a leg.

The parents did consider separation surgery at one point, however, Doctor Mitchell Steorts, their pediatrician, said that doing so would not only be challenging but also could possibly risk their lives.

Mitchell said, “the girls have a much better life expectancy than if they had been separated. Developmentally, they’re meeting all of their cognitive milestones and also meeting all of their social milestones, it’s just keep it up and figuring how to get around this can be the biggest thing that’s holding back.”

A Positive and Optimistic Future.

Other parents in Blackfoot, Idaho treat the twins like any other kids in town. They usually around by improvising a crawl, love playing with their big brother Jason and even appreciate the joy of bath time like any other kid their age.

What’s even better is that neither Nick or Chelsea are bothered whether or not people disagree with their decision to keep the twins as they are now. Just like any loving and caring parent, both of them just want to see their girls live a long life.

“What parent doesn’t want their kids to be happy,” Nick says.

Chelsea also chimed in by saying, “I want them to realize that even though they’re together, they can do things other people can do.
