One detail about animals that we tend to forget is their unpredictability, even when they are trained. We like to believe that we can train animals to our will and most of the times they will behave, but not always. When an animal has an idea or action in their brain they are going to do it, especially when it comes to food! When this pony saw some delicious food on an obstacle course, he could not think of anything else!
At a Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America event the obstacle course was set up with potted flowers and plants throughout. What no one took into consideration was one very mischievous Welsh pony. A youth handler brought this pony onto the course and from the very beginning, all he was interested in was some snack time!
The youth handler did not even make it through the first obstacle before the pony started munching on the plants. She tried her best to wrangle his attention back on the course, but this pony only had food on the brain! Two adults come on the course to help her get back on track and they take off for the second obstacle.
She was probably hoping that the Welsh pony would now listen and let her guide him, but that was not the case! They almost get through the second obstacle with ease, but then a bigger potted plant was spotted, and he is right back at it! If the smaller plant looked tasty, then this bigger plant had no chance!
Luckily, the third obstacle was decorated with flowers. These are just not what this pony is craving today. The youth rider gets a small little break as they venture through this obstacle with ease, but uh-oh, there is more greenery ahead!
The strength of this pony and his will to snack is getting hard for the youth rider. She is doing the best as she can, but this naughty pony will just not stop snacking! An adult comes to help and moves the plant away, but this pony will not budge until he is done chewing. The girl tries her hardest to get the pony to move, but he is not moving until he is ready!
The next obstacle starts off better! She even gets the pony to go straight past some plants, but that is only because he was looking at the plants ahead! So close to the finish line, but not close enough as he goes for another plant. Luckily, the adult knew by now that pony had a mind of his own and was close by, who laughingly helps the girl.
Finally, the pony and the youth handler make it to the end! While the girl is a bit sweaty from her hard work, she walks off the course with a big smile. The audience gives her a big cheer as well, which was much deserved! The ability for this young handler to be able to stay calm and keep her cool under pressure was very impressive.
The Welsh pony might not have completed the obstacle course as it should have been done, but he definitely put on a show!
