School principals aren’t always straight-faced and unapproachable. TV shows, movies, and books always make them out to be standoffish, creating a stereotype that students easily believe. While their job requires them to set proper boundaries and enforce school rules through proper implementation and appropriate disciplinary actions, that doesn’t mean their goal is to make every trip to their office scary and unpleasant for students.
Do you remember what the principal of your school was like? Were they like the ones you’ve read about, or were they the opposite?
Some school principals, without trying to be, are pretty cool. Their genuine love for what they do translates through how they interact with colleagues and students.
They know how to make you feel seen and heard and help keep the school in tip-top shape by supporting the right activities. Moreover, they go out of their way to check in with students who they know are experiencing more challenges.
And speaking of ‘pretty cool,’ here’s one principal who pulls double-duty: principal by day, showstopper by night!
Principal Marie Hautigan of Piper High School gave the students a happy surprise when she ran out to the field during a homecoming game in a sparkly orange dress.
No, she wasn’t there to simply show off her outfit and make a speech. She was there with incredible school spirit, dancing with the marching band!
She ran out, all smiles, and tried to hype up the crowd even more. You can tell from the excited screams and loud applause that the principal is loved by the students. She responded to their cheers by waving excitedly and blowing kisses.
It didn’t take long for the fun performance to go viral. And in true principal fashion, Principal Hautigan says she hopes this will lead to donations for new uniforms for the marching band. She even tweeted a video of her dance and earned a lot of praise.
There were also a lot of sweet comments under the YouTube video. User KeetLegs wrote,
She’s my daughter’s Principal. She is hands down the best. She’s cool but she does not play. She even makes all the students take PreSAT tests every year. Can’t say enough about her! #GOBENGALS!
Livy Lu’s comment read,
I don’t know why this made me so happy, but it did. Not only is she an awesome principal, but she’s giving a good lesson. To go outside of your comfort zone and have fun.
Vulnerability takes strength. To gamely dance in front of the school isn’t easy, but this principal did it with a smile on her face.
She’s definitely one of a kind! Piper High School is lucky to have her.

I had the honor to perform with the Piper Band of Pride at Homecoming. Big win! This is for every Bengal who goes to practice every day to be the best. Iām not as talented as you, but I respect your commitment to excellence. Shoutout to my teachers Lexus & Ciara. Love my Bengals pic.twitter.com/oX35hEiRfS
